About

What is Iriun Webcam?

Iriun Webcam is a small app that turns the smartphone you already own into a high-quality webcam for your computer. Instead of buying a separate camera, you install a desktop client on your PC, Mac or Linux machine and a companion app on your Android or iOS phone. The two connect over your home Wi-Fi — or a USB cable — and your phone's camera becomes available to any program that uses a webcam.

It was built for a simple reason: phone cameras are excellent, and most laptop webcams are not. Rather than spend money on dedicated hardware that's often lower quality than a three-year-old phone, Iriun lets you put the better camera to work. Once connected, it appears in your camera list as "Iriun Webcam," so apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and OBS treat it exactly like any plug-in camera.

That makes it a good fit for remote workers on video calls, students in online classes, streamers and content creators who want a sharp second angle, and anyone whose built-in camera has simply stopped being good enough.

Who it's for

Troubleshooting

Common problems & fixes

Phone and computer won't connect

Make sure both devices are on the exact same Wi-Fi network — not a guest network or a 5GHz/2.4GHz split that isolates them. If they still don't find each other, try a USB connection instead.

Video is laggy or stuttering

Latency usually comes from a weak Wi-Fi signal. Move closer to the router, switch to a USB connection, or lower the resolution in the desktop client's settings.

Iriun doesn't appear in Zoom/Teams

Fully quit and reopen the conferencing app after starting the Iriun desktop client, so it can detect the new camera. On macOS, confirm camera permissions are granted.

Camera is black or frozen

Close other apps that might be using the camera, then restart the Iriun phone app. Confirm the phone app has camera permission in your device settings.

No audio from the phone mic

Select Iriun as the microphone separately in your app's audio settings, or keep your existing mic if you prefer. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm mic support details.]

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Iriun Webcam free?

Iriun is free to download and use. [PLACEHOLDER: describe any Pro tier and what it adds — e.g. higher resolution, no watermark.]

Where do I download Iriun safely?

Download Iriun only from the official source to avoid tampered or bundled installers. Use the desktop client for your operating system and install the phone app from the App Store or Google Play. Avoid third-party mirrors that repackage the installer.

How do I install Iriun on Windows?

Download the Windows client, run the installer, and follow the prompts. Install the Iriun app on your phone, connect both to the same Wi-Fi network, then select Iriun Webcam in your video app. The whole process takes about a minute.

How do I install it on macOS?

Open the macOS client and grant camera permission when prompted in System Settings. Install the phone app, connect over Wi-Fi or USB, and choose Iriun as your camera. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm minimum macOS version.]

Does it need Wi-Fi?

Iriun connects over the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. A wired USB connection is also supported on compatible platforms for lower latency, which is handy on weaker networks.

Which apps does it work with?

Iriun shows up as a normal webcam, so it works in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, OBS, Skype, Discord and most apps that let you pick a camera.

What video quality can I get?

Up to 1080p depending on your phone and connection. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm max resolution and any 4K support, and note if higher resolutions require a paid tier.]

Does Iriun work on Mac?

Yes. There are desktop clients for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus phone apps for Android and iOS.

Is Iriun safe to use?

Iriun runs locally between your phone and computer. [PLACEHOLDER: state exactly what data, if any, is collected, and link your Privacy Policy.] Always download from the official source so you get an unmodified installer.

What permissions does it need?

The phone app needs camera access, and microphone access if you want to use the phone's mic. The desktop client installs a virtual camera driver so other apps can see the feed. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm exact permissions.]

Can I use the rear camera?

Yes, you can switch between the front and rear cameras in the phone app. The rear camera is usually higher quality and a good choice when the phone is mounted.

How do I update Iriun?

Update the phone app through the App Store or Google Play, and download the latest desktop client when a new version is released. [PLACEHOLDER: note whether the client auto-checks for updates.]

Does it work without an account?

Yes. There's no sign-up, login or email required — install both apps, connect, and start using your phone as a webcam.

Why isn't Iriun showing up in my video app?

Start the Iriun desktop client first, then fully quit and reopen your video app so it detects the new camera. On macOS, confirm camera permission is granted in System Settings.

What are the best alternatives to Iriun?

Several apps turn a phone into a webcam, each with different pricing and platform support. See the comparison table above for an honest side-by-side. [PLACEHOLDER: name the specific alternatives you want covered.]

Can I use Iriun for streaming on OBS?

Yes. Add Iriun as a video capture source in OBS just like any webcam. It's a common setup for streamers who want a sharper camera than their built-in one.
