10 tips for better video

Small changes that make your phone-as-webcam feed look noticeably more professional.

  1. Use the rear camera. It's usually higher quality than the front-facing one.
  2. Mount the phone. A small tripod or clamp keeps the image steady and at eye level.
  3. Light your face, not your back. Face a window or lamp; avoid bright light behind you.
  4. Go wired for important calls. USB gives steadier video than Wi-Fi.
  5. Match resolution to your network. Drop the resolution if you see stutter.
  6. Clean the lens. Phone lenses pick up smudges — a quick wipe helps.
  7. Frame at eye level. Raise the phone so the camera meets your eyeline.
  8. Close background apps on the phone to free up resources.
  9. Keep the phone charging during long sessions — streaming the camera drains the battery.
  10. Test before you go live in your video app's preview so there are no surprises.
